Turkey Themed Preschool Activities

Thanksgiving time is a great time to learn about turkeys!  These animals have long been connected to the holiday, so it makes sense to learn about them at that time.  Turkeys can also be taught during a woodland or forest unit if you would like to focus more on the history of Thanksgiving during that time.

Turkey Snack Craft

Turkey Feather Counting

This activity can be done several ways.  Students can count using dabbers or stickers.  You can assign a number to each feather or roll a die to add an element of surprise.  You can read more about this activity here:  Turkey Feather Counting Blog Post

Turkey Snack Craft

The most popular animal of November has got to be the turkey.  Today I am sharing a fun turkey snack craft that most every child can make.  My 2, 4, 6, and 9 year old LOVED this activity, though they probably loved the eating part the most.

First, each child will need 1 doughut (any flavor is fine, I chose cinnamon since all 4 of my kids like that flavor), 4 toothpicks, 2 round candies, 1 candy corn, and a handful of round cereal (we used Cheerios since that is what I had on hand, but Fruit Loops or any other cereal of that nature will work). 

*Note that the candy corn is not pictured.  My brilliant 9 year old came up with the idea to use the candy corn for the beak as I told her I didn't think I had anything that was triangle we could use.  I had totally forgotten I had them until she asked.* 

First, place the 4 toothpicks on the back of the doughnut.  Smaller children may need help with this step to get the toothpicks in the right location.  As long as you leave room for the eyes, the toothpicks can be anywhere on the doughnut.

Then, string the cereal onto the toothpicks.  My youngest only wanted to do one, as she was too impatient and wanted to eat right away!

Next, place the 2 round candies for the eyes and the candy corn for the beak. Now you have completed the turkey and finish with gobbling it up!  This was by far the favorite part of this activity for my crew!

Turkey Math Game and Craft

Last November, I was sitting down, trying to come up with an idea for a fun activity to help my then 3 year old learn to count without skipping any numbers.  He routinely left out the number 4.  I had scrolled Pinterest for hours looking for fun counting games and activities, but none had seemed capture his attention.

On a totally unrelated search, I came across a turkey dot painting craft.  I was like, ah ha!  I can turn this into a game for my son to practice counting!   He loves crafts, especially dot markers, so this seemed like the perfect activity.

Fast forward a few days, and I set up the activity.  I drew a turkey on a large sheet of paper (My eldest decided to embellish the turkey to make it look cuter), drew lines where the feathers should be, then showed him what to do.

I gave him a die, instructed him to roll it then he dotted that many dots on the first feather.  We repeated this process until all the feathers were covered.  He thoroughly enjoyed the activity and it forced him to say the number 4 as he counted the higher dice rolls.  

You can also turn this math game and craft into a fine motor activity by using dot stickers instead of dot markers.  Students can get those little hand muscles working by peeling and sticking the stickers on the line.
